Fair To Middling By Tony Pena

Woke up on the right
side of bed but shit
never quite lived up to
the great expectations
of cavalier cock crowing
as Dickensian days
rubbed shine off sun
with rags greasy
from the black
blood of factories.
Even the dark
chocolate of night
lost her taste for dreams
of romance and mystery
to brain washing
rituals and routines
leaving a hangdog
moon in her wake.
